Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a new development in the area of combustion using solid oxygen carriers. It is a 2 step process wherein the oxygen carrier transfers its oxygen by reacting with fuel in the first step to produce CO2 and water; and later the reduced oxygen carrier is regenerated (oxidized) in the separate second step using air. The net energy obtained in the two step process is of similar magnitude as heat of combustion of the fuel; only with the advantage of having CO2 stream separate from N2 stream.
